Salinas, California is the seventh most expensive city in the United States to live in.

The list ranks cities by comparing “how comfortably the average resident of each metropolitan area can live within his or her means.” The calculation involves weighing the incomes of renters and homeowners against the cost of housing.

While the actual cost of living in Salinas may be significantly lower than in San Francisco, the gap between average annual income, median home price, and median monthly rent is not. The median home price in Salinas is $925,458, which is dwarfed by the city’s average salary of $56,350. Meanwhile, San Francisco has a median home price of $1,122,946 and an average salary of $86,590.

California cities took seven of the top 10 spots on the list, with San Diego and Los Angeles ranking first and second, respectively. The Bay Area city of Santa Rosa ranked eighth.

It’s unclear whether U.S. News & World Report’s list refers to the city of Salinas or the entire Salinas metro area, which includes the wealthy neighborhoods of Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea. However, locals say the city has a high cost of living.

Joaquin Turner, who commutes between Salinas and Carmel-by-the-Sea, where he runs an art gallery, told SFGATE that rents in Salinas are currently “very high.” U.S. News & World Report shows the median monthly rent in the city is $1,718.

“We think Salinas is cheaper,” he said, “but if you compare it to the rest of the U.S., or even the rest of California, Salinas is still pretty expensive.”

Salinas’ high cost of living is a challenge for many residents, especially those who work in the city’s agricultural sector. The city’s higher median home price is also a barrier to first-time homebuyers entering the city.

2022 The City Council approved a plan to build 1,000 new affordable housing units over the next five years. However, it is unclear whether this will be sufficient to meet the needs of the city’s growing population.
