The Future of the Philadelphia 76ers is Full of Uncertainty

The Philadelphia 76ers have had another crazy offseason with James Harden leaving the team last week, basically like Ben Simmons. As much as this annoys Sixers fans, worse things could happen as a result.

2023 NBA MVP Joel Embiid has been mentioned in rumors throughout the offseason. While the 76ers clearly don’t want to move Embiid right now, rival teams are keeping a close eye on Embiid and his eventual willingness to leave Philadelphia.

One of those teams watching Embiid is the New York Knicks.

The Knicks are willing to give up “three key players” and multiple first round picks for the reigning MVP.

Players available for trade include Julius Randle, R.J. Barrett, Mitchell Robinson and Evan Fournier. While the offer includes a former All-Star and a rising star, it’s unlikely the Sixers would accept any trade package that didn’t include Jalen Brunson. Other teams would likely beat out the Knicks for this offer.

The Future of the Philadelphia 76ers is Full of Uncertainty

If the offer includes Brunson, maybe the deal makes sense. Philadelphia’s new starting five would be Brunson, Tyrese Maxey, Bamot, Tobias Harris and Robinson. But with the Sixers already losing Harden in the near future, the Sixers likely won’t give up Embiid and completely destroy their core in one year.

If the Sixers want to trade for someone other than Harden, it would more than likely be Harris, who is in the final year of his contract and is making $39,271,500 this season.

With that said, given Harden’s inevitable exit and what’s happening in Philadelphia, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Embiid put in a trade request before next season. He hasn’t had any real playoff success with the Sixers and could eventually grow tired of their inability to break through to the second round.
