MSU Bulldogs Shine in First Day of John Cade Invitational

The Mississippi State Bulldogs had a strong first day at the third annual John Cade Invitational, with four players advancing to the singles main draw round of eight.Dharani Niroshan, Jayna Clemens and Maria Rizzolo earned singles victories on Friday to advance to the final eight, while Athina Pitta advanced after a first-round upset.Niroshan and partner Alessia Tagliente also advanced to the doubles semifinals, contributing to five wins for the host Bulldogs.

Rizzolo defeated North Texas’ Lilly Schultz in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-3. Niroshan defeated Louisiana Tech’s Tiffani Nash, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, and Clemens defeated North Texas’ Nformi Stadfany.

The three MSU players, along with Pitta, will compete in the quarterfinals at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center on Saturday at 11 a.m. Niroshan will face Louisville’s Lillian Mould, Clemens will face Ole Miss’ Andrea Nova, Rizzolo will face Louisiana Tech’s Ana Rizzolo will face Louisiana Tech’s Ana Rodrigues, and Pitta will face Louisville’s Lika Persypkina.

Niroshan and Tagliente will begin their matches on Saturday at 9 a.m. when they take on Louisville’s Ibifuro Clement and Elena Noguero in doubles play.

Several other Bulldogs will also be competing on Saturday.Pitta and partner Alexandra Mikhailuk will face Carolina Laydner and Stanislava Shulzhenko of North Texas, Rizzolo and Chloé Cirotte will face Mean Green’s Lou Chalard and Olivia Malm. both doubles matches will also start at 9 a.m.

Saturday’s singles matches will also include Ava Rath versus Louisville’s Elena Noguero and Mikhailuk versus Clement.Those matches will begin at 11 a.m. at the Rula Tennis Complex.
