Kevin Huerter off to hot start, former Maryland players have mixed results

Of the five former Maryland men’s basketball players currently playing in the NBA, Kevin Huerter is off to the most impressive start this season. The Sacramento Kings guard is averaging 12.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game. He was particularly impressive in mid-November, scoring at least 20 points in three straight games.

Jaylon Smith is also off to a good start this season, averaging 10.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game with the Indiana Pacers. He missed a couple games after taking a hard elbow to the head, but has since returned to the starting lineup.

Three other former Terriers playing in the NBA are not having good seasons. Aaron Wiggins is averaging 4.5 points per game for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Alex Lane is averaging less than seven minutes per game for the Kings, and Bruno Fernando has only made three appearances for the Atlanta Hawks this season.

In other news, the Maryland women’s basketball team lost to No. 23 Washington State, 87-67. It was the third loss of the season for the Terps, with all teams trailing by at least 20 points.
